Welcome to the Birthplace of the Open Championship
At Prestwick in Ayrshire, in the heart of Burns Country, the most important golf tournament in the world has its home. It was here on a windy Wednesday morning in October 1860 that professional tournament golf as we know it today all began. The first Open Championship attracted a field of eight professional players. Today the great links of Turnberry and Royal Troon reinforce this unique Open Championship connection to Scotland’s Southwest. In 2009 the Open Championship returned to this area and Ayrshire once more saw the world’s best professional golfers flock to the legendry links of Turnberry to take on the greatest challenge in professional golf. Tom Watson, master of the craft, captured the world's attention and encouragement as he displayed skill and genius reminiscent of his play at Turnberry in 1977. However it was Stewart Cink, keeping his cool under pressure, that proved to be the worthy Open Champion on this occasion. But the Home of the Open isn’t just about these three famous Ayrshire courses that have such close connections to the Championship. Throughout the region there is a treasure trove of great golf just waiting to be discovered. Ayrshire & Arran is the perfect destination for the golfer.
