Food & Drink Itineraries
Ayrshire & Arran are particularly rich in food resources, thanks to good agricultural land, a small but hardy fishing fleet and people willing to put their life savings into producing the best food for the table. Everywhere in Ayrshire & Arran, there is an exciting talent for cooking with local produce. Abounding energy and enthusiasm are evident in the diversity of production, ingredients and cooking styles. Eating here is a celebration of twenty-first century food as fine and fresh as it gets - first-time visitors should anticipate seriously good breakfasts, irresistible afternoon tea, and wholesome dinners. The coastal destination provides a constant supply of local catch, and there is nothing better than fresh seafood eaten within a glimpse of the sea.
This is a part of the worldwhich still reveres a proper cooked breakfast, and, apart from kippers, it would be unthinkable to send a visitor off for the day without a slice or two of Ayrshire bacon. This is the very best breakfast bacon to sit nicely alongside a tattie scone and a perfectly fried free-range egg. And on the other side of the pig-dairy bond, there are some stunning farmhouse cheeses coming out of Ayrshire & Arran, which is not surprising considering the quality of local milk.It would hardly do to visit Robert Burns' own county without tasting a haggis and several restaurants and cafes in the area will oblige. It's not compulsory but you really should try it, perhaps with a drop of William Grant's famous Scotch whisky from their distillery at Girvan. Arran is famous for many things, only one of which is Arran mustard. Made without any artificial flavourings or colourings, the mustards have a wonderful homemade feel to them. Elsewhere on the island you can purchase cheese, chocolates, smoked salmon and many other goodies... Many producers also offer you the opportunity to see their goods being produced - this makes them even more tempting! All food shops, restaurants, cafes and bistros throughout the island, which support all local food resources, are worth seeking out too to celebrate the diversity, the quality and the smallness of this unique island.
