Walking & Cycling Itineraries
You don't have to be a hardened enthusiast to take advantage of what's on offer in Ayrshire & Arran.Walkers have a choice of hill walking and rambling while Arran poses greater challenges of ridge walking and mountaineering. Anyone looking for gentler pace, though, will find it in the form of numerous nature trails. There are easy walks to well known local landmarks, and seasonal ranger-lead walks from some of Ayrshire and Arran's country parks.
The National Cycling Network has routes in Ayrshire, passing through some of the most scenic countryside, and making use of off the road tracks and waterside paths wherever possible. Or from Largs, take the 10-minute ferry trip to the Isle of Cumbrae. The island is only four miles long and two miles wide, making the easiest and most fun way to get about, by bicycle ¿ take your own or hire one in Millport, pick a direction and cycle your cares away. On Arran avariety of terrain awaits the cycling enthusiast and if you don¿t have your own bike with you, bicycles of all types are available for hire on the island. The 56 miles around the island are a long but popular route and villages along the way provide many opportunities to enjoy fine views and major landmarks. The String, across the middle of the island, is a testing route but you will be rewarded with spectacular views to the hills. There is an opportunity for off-road cycling from Dyemill to Kilmory on the south coast but the route passes through working forestry land and it is advisable to ensure felling is not in progress before setting off. Ayrshire shares the Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park and the Galloway Forest Park with neighbouring counties, and both provide a beautiful setting for a walking break or cycling holiday.
So if your boots were made for walking or you want to get on your bike, check out the following possibilities...
